T-Mobile Announces New Nokia 3711 for the Holidays

Nokia3711

T-Mobile has announced the availability of a couple of new phones for the 2009 holiday season. Among them is a simple handset from Nokia. The Nokia 3711 appears to be a basic and standard flip phone. Pricing will be available shortly, but based on its appearance and feature set it appears to be an entry level phone.

The world needs good entry level phones though. Not everyone can afford an Iphone or Blackberry and not everyone needs to carry a mini supercomputer in their pocket!

The Nokia 3711 is a slick looking flip phone that comes in a sable finish.

Features:
1. Unique hidden until lit external display

This is kind of a neat idea. Basically, when you look at the outside of the Nokia 3711 you will not see anything. When you press a button or someone calls, then it will light up and display something. I think that this will look cool, but ultimately people want to be able to glance at there phone and see what time it is without pressing a button or opening the flip. Time will tell how well this feature is received.

2. The phone has built in GPS for use with NokiaMaps.

I am not alone in getting lost all the time, so built in GPS is always welcome.

3. Two megapixel camera with video capture.

This is becoming standard on modern handsets.  The addition of video capture to still pictures is a nice feature.  We will have to wait and see on the quality, but for fun, spur of the moment activities it should do nicely.

4. Stereo Bluetooth

One of the most under untilized features of mobile phones is bluetooth capability.  Adding stereo is a nice touch.

5. The Nokia 3711 is a Series 40 phone.

Nice to see Nokia still producing S40 phones!

6. The phone also can connect to the web with T-Mobile web2go and it supports 3G.

7. It offers email and instant messaging.

This is a given in a modern cell phone, but worth mentioning.

We will have to wait and find out the price before jumping to any conclusions, but overall this is a nice looking phone that will make someone’s holiday a bit more merry!

How to find out if your Nokia phone is Authentic or Not

Fake Nokia N97

You have probably heard the old saying – if something is too good to be true, then it probably is. When purchasing a mobile phone some deals look unbelievable. In many cases they are, but sometimes you get what you pay for and more. Some mobile phones are cheap knockoffs or grey market items. The cheap knockoffs are often made in China and do not have valid warranties. A grey market phone was most likely made by the original manufacturer, but was never intended to be sold in your country for one reason or another.

Either way, you want to know that you get what you paid for. If you purchase your phone from a reputable dealer or directly from your wireless service carrier, then you probably have nothing to worry about. If you purchase a second hand phone on eBay or worse yet, off a street corner, then you may have a fake.

If you have purchased a Nokia phone there are a couple of quick and easy things that you can do to determine the legitimacy of your handset. Type in one of the following combinations and press the call button. If you have a real Nokia phone then these commands should work. If your phone is not authentic, they will not.

1.Type in #0000#. This will open up a menu showing the phones firmware version.
2.Type in #92702689#. This will open up the warranty menu.
3.Type in #06#. This will open up a menu showing the IMEI number.

Hopefully, you have an authentic Nokia phone. If you do not, then hopefully you didn’t pay full price for it!

Play Mike Tyson’s Punch Out on your phone?

Download here: NES Mike Tyson’s Punch Out!

This is a great game for your S40 Nokia phone. It is a knock off of the classic Nintendo NES game Mike Tyson’s Punch Out! There is no Bald Bull, but the game is full of its own quirky and interesting characters.

The point of the game is very much the same as in the NES version. You are a young up and coming fighter who must fight his way up the ranks. The gameplay is similar also. You can throw four punches, a left or right jab to the stomach and a left or right hook to the head. If you connect enough, you also get a super punch which adds more oomph. Your opponent will follow a simple pattern of blocking and throwing punches that you must decipher in order to knock him out.

This is a fun and simple game that will keep you occupied. If you are a fan of the original Nintendo hit, then this is a must have for your S40 Nokia phone.

Free Cell Phone with Minutes

That title sure sounds like spam, but it is true (if you qualify). You can get a free cell phone with minutes from Safelinkwireless.com. They are part of a government program called Lifeline Assistance. They provide free or discounted phone service for low income people. They will give you a free phone, free service and free minutes every month with no contract or cost as long as you are eligible. You also get voice mail, text messaging and call waiting for free and your unused minutes will rollover.

The eligibility requirements differ between states, but in general there are two main points. One, if you are currently on another government assistance program, such as food stamps, Section 8 or Medicaid then you are eligible. Two, if your household income is at or below 135% of the poverty guidelines set by your State and/or the Federal Government, then you are eligible. For example, in the state of Michigan if your annual household income is below $33,075 for a family of four, you would be eligible for a free phone.

You do not have to meet both requirements, just one or the other. The only other requirement is that you have a valid US address so that they can send you the phone and only one person per household can participate.

They will require that you prove your income through one of 4 methods.

-Letter from your employer
-Last year’s income tax return
-Employer W-2 form
-4 months of consecutive pay stubs

The program is not available everywhere. Currently it is available in the following states:

Alabama, Connecticut, D. of Columbia, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin

There are plans to begin offering service soon in the States listed below:
Arizona , Puerto Rico, Illinois, Texas, Kentucky, Washington, Missouri, Ohio

The benefits will vary from state to state, but in general you will receive about 6o minutes per month. Additional minutes can be purchased at any store that sells Tracfone airtime cards. Also, you do not need to sign a contract.

They don’t specify the style or brand of phone that you will receive, but the website has a picture of a Motorola phone (check it out below). Tracfone primarily supplies Motorola, Samsung and LG brand phones.

For those that qualify, this program is a great deal. If you are eligible you can go to http://www.safelinkwireless.com and apply.

Create your own Nokia Wallpaper

It is common to change the wallpaper on your computer desktop, but not on your mobile phone. Customization of your cell phone background is just as easy. You can use any of the thousands of wallpapers available on the net or here at Nokia-Review, but it is also very easy to create your own.

All you need to create your own Nokia Wallpaper is a digital picture and photo editing software. You will also need a data cable or bluetooth to get your file onto your phone. The first step is to save your digital image as a .jpeg file with low or medium resolution. You can use a .gif also, but they are best suited for a picture with few colors. The goal with either format is to keep the size of the file under 10KB.

The second step is to format your picture to the correct size. The size will differ based on which Nokia model phone you are using. Series 40 phones typically use 128×128 and Series 60 phones usually use 174×132. Check your model for specific sizes, for example, the Nokia 6630 uses a a wallpaper size of 174×144.

The third and final step prior to uploading to your phone is setting the number of colors. Most phones are capable of displaying thousands of colors, but setting your picture to 256 colors will save memory. Try it both ways to see which you like best! A big difference between the computer desktop and your mobile phone is the small amount of screen space. In a small area, with memory and storage at a premium, fewer colors should look just fine.

In short, there are 4 easy steps to creating and displaying your own custom made wallpaper on your Nokia phone.

1.Select a digital image and save it as a .jpg or .gif.
2.Format it to the correct size. Typically, 128×128 for S4 phones or 174×132 for S6 phones.
3.Set the colors to the correct level, either thousands or 256 to save memory.
4.Upload and enjoy!
